Where Two or Three are Gathered

In Matthew 18:20, Jesus tells us that, “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” That was the case at the Catholic Medical Association’s 94th Annual Educational Conference where about 700 health care professionals gathered at the downtown Kansas City Sept 4-6. Not only was God present spiritually, but He was also present in the fullest sense sacramentally because the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was offered daily and there was perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. In addition, our Episcopal Advisor Bishop James Conley and several priests heard confessions.

Things were a bit different this year because at the same time, the Catholic Bar Association (CBA) gathered for their annual meeting coming together at a joint session, and at our annual White and Red Mass offered by Bishop James Johnston, Bishop of the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph.

The conference chair was Anthony Oliva, M.D. who did an excellent job gathering speakers and presenters. The keynote speaker at the banquet was Sr. Deidre Byrne, M.D, POSC. She emphasized the importance of having a strong relationship with the Eucharist because the Eucharist is Jesus. She also reminded us that the Holy Rosary is a powerful weapon in the battle of good vs evil. A book was written about her entitled, The Life and Courage of Sister Deirdre Byre, M.D., Sister, Soldier, Surgeon and she is all of those things. At the banquet we also heard inspiring words from our president Dr. Michelle Stanford and incoming president Dr. David Hilger.

I heard multiple comments, some from first time attendees. Those who shared said they love attending the CMA conferences because they are pertinent to present day challenges in a setting described as a retreat. How could it be any other way for those of us who possess the fullness of the faith? All knew that the most distinguished guest that attended was the Divine Physician himself, Jesus Christ, who is the way, the truth and the life, (John 14:6), “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them” (Mattew 18:20).
