What Are You Looking For?

In the first chapter of John’s gospel, we read about the encounter of Jesus and Andrew and a fellow companion who were followers of John the Baptist. After pointing out Jesus, John said to them, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” Andrew and the other disciple started following Jesus who turned around and asked them, “What are you looking for?” They answered, “Rabbi, where are you staying?” Don’t you find this answer a little odd?

When asked, ‘What are you looking for?’ or ‘What do you want?’ many would answer differently. For example, at a recent Mass, I asked this same question. One person said, “Answers to the questions in life.” Many of the answers were similar.

Taking a closer look, Andrew’s answer makes a lot of sense because when we see and spend time with someone where they live, we learn a lot about them. We learn what ‘makes them tick.’

For us, where does Jesus stay? Jesus, in His divinity is everywhere, He is omnipresent. But in his sacred humanity, He is only present in two places, at the right hand of the Father in heaven and in tabernacles around the world. In the Blessed Sacrament, Jesus is present in his human body, blood, soul and divinity.

Just weeks ago, I received a Christmas card from a young working mother with children. She is a very busy woman. In her card she said, “Earlier this month, I read the article you wrote for the Southern Nebraska Register regarding spending time in front of the Blessed Sacrament. I am so grateful you encouraged me to do this when you were our pastor… Although I was initially hesitant at how I could find the time, I am glad I listened to you as I have since grown to understand how precious this time with Jesus truly is. It has had such an impact on my life and I have you to thank for encouraging me. May you have a very blessed Christmas season!”

No matter how busy you are, I encourage you to visit Jesus each week in the tabernacle where Jesus stays. He is completely present there in his divinity and sacred humanity. I promise you that with time, you too will grow to understand how precious this time is and like John the Baptist, you too will point out the Lamb of God who lives in ‘all the tabernacles of the world, even to the end of time.’

Jesus, who is the Blessed Sacrament, have mercy on us. Mary, whose womb was the first tabernacle, pray for us!
