PA Leadership Collaborates with State Bishops’ Conference

Representatives from CMA Guilds in Pennsylvania met with leadership from the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference of Bishops to address the disturbing and radical House Bills emanating from the current legislature, mostly relating to an aggressive relaxation of abortion laws currently in effect.

Physician leaders and guild representatives met with Eric Failing, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference of Bishops, on October 29. The Zoom meeting was arranged by Deacon Dr. Bruno Schettini, CMA Regional and State Director for Pennsylvania, and included Deacon Dr. Bruno Schettini, Dr Robert Motley (Philadelphia), Dr. Tom Seykora (Allentown), Dr. Greg Burke (Harrisburg, CMA Secretary), Dr. Marguerite Duane (Duquesne University), Dr. Tim Millea (CMA Health Policy) and Dr. Jeffrey McGovern (Erie).

Mr. Failing presented a comprehensive review of the current legislative landscape as only one so close to the legislative fire could present. He did much to assuage our initial concern about the radical House Bills but also voiced a warning about the fragile balance in the House and Senate that could someday change in which bills such as these could be passed. He also provided insight on the discussion of assisted suicide and transgender issues currently discussed in the Pennsylvania chambers. The physicians on the call brought up the need for further communication to Catholic physicians in the state and spoke openly about support for ongoing collaboration with the bishops, especially on the issue of pro-life.

One participant suggested a follow-up call, so that physician leaders of CMA in Pennsylvania can be continually apprised of these issues and appropriate actions. As a result, quarterly meetings will be scheduled. CMA Pennsylvania leadership is grateful the PA bishops and the work they do for the flock in the midst of the Culture of Death. That appreciation also extends to Mr. Failing and others like him, who work both quietly and vocally on their behalf.

Would it not be ideal if all CMA leaders had that same connection with their states’ bishop conference?
