The Church dedicates the month of January to the Most Holy Name of Jesus (Jan. 3). From the Ordo, “Through the efforts of St. Bernadine of Siena (20 May), devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus ( “Yahweh is salvation”) was promoted through the inscription of the monogram of the Holy Name, IHS (an abbreviation of the Greek name for Jesus, Ἰησοῦς) and the addition of the name Jesus to the Hail Mary.”

We would encourage you to recite the Litany of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, featured in the Magnificat this month. You can also say short ejaculatory prayers such as “Jesus, I trust in you” or simply repeat His name softly throughout the day. Prepare yourself with a response when someone uses His name in anger or casually.

Our theme for this month is Courage to Defend the Image of God. Recreational drug use results in the abuse of the human person. Many states, such as Colorado, have legalized marijuana. The Most Reverend Samuel J. Aquila, S.T.L has provided his flock in the Archdiocese of Denver with an important pastoral letter, That They Might Have Life, on the effects of legalized marijuana.

The National March for Life (Jan 19) continues as more states enshrine abortion in their state constitutions. If you cannot make it to D.C. with us, several states are also marching to defend human life on various dates. As physicians and healthcare professionals, we encounter many patients with terminal illnesses. We offer this video of the impact on Tammy Peterson of saying the Rosary when faced with a cancer diagnosis.

The Epiphany of the Lord (Jan. 7) immediately precedes the Baptism of the Lord (Jan. 8). The saints we would like to highlight are St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (Jan. 4), St. Andre Bessette (Jan. 6), the child martyr St. Agnes (Jan. 21) and St. Francis de Sales (Jan. 24). St. Andre had a lifelong devotion to St. Joseph, through whom many healing miracles occurred. He was instrumental in the building of Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal, a national shrine in Montreal, Canada.
