| Our theme for the month of February is The Power of Prayer in Healing as we recall the 18 visits of Our Lady of Lourdes (Feb. 11) to young Bernadette in 1858, where she encouraged the daily Rosary and left a healing spring. The true miracle of Lourdes is not only the physical cures, but the spiritual miracles that occur there. Two of the members of the FIRE committee experienced these when they made a pilgrimage to Lourdes. We recommend The Song of Bernadette (1943), winner of four Academy Awards, and Bernadette (2008). The book, Everyday Miracles of Lourdes by Marlene Watkins gives a window into the Lourdes volunteers and ongoing miracles. The World Day of the Sick is also Feb. 11 and Pope Leo XIV asks us to have “the compassion of the Samaritan: loving by bearing another’s pain.” His entire message is seen here.
We will enter into Lent, a time of self-reflection and sacrifice, with Ash Wednesday (Feb. 18). As we receive the ashes, we suggest meditating on the words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” (Gen 3:19) As physicians we can be on the roller coaster of life with work and family, not giving a thought to our end. But our death could happen when we least expect it and suddenly we are standing before God, no longer able to change. Make this a fruitful Lent! Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House in Waverly, Nebraska is hosting a retreat for Catholic healthcare professionals March 20-22, 2026. Go here for more info and to register. Saints for this month include St. Scholastica (Feb. 10) who prayed for a miracle so her twin brother, St. Benedict, could stay with her longer. Saints Cyril and Methodius (Feb. 14), brothers from Thessalonica in the 9th century, traveled to modern day Ukraine, where they translated the liturgy, the Bible and the Early Church Fathers into Slavonic. Lastly, St. Gregory of Narek, Abbot and Doctor of the Church (Feb. 27) lived at the end of the first millennium in Armenia and is known for his Book of Prayers, which is still used for healing.
